Getting Here

Fraser Island Retreat is on Queensland’s beautiful K’gari (the world’s largest sand island) and ideally located in Happy Valley on the eastern (ocean) side, only 60km from the southern tip of the island. We are set just 200m back from the beach and provide central access to inland tracks and all the scenic destinations.

Access is by 4WD ONLY:

  • From the South:
Drive to rainbow Beach and then to Inskip Pt. Take Manta Ray barge from Inskip Pt – no bookings needed but you may have to wait in the queue. Then, preferably around the time of the low tide, drive up the beach to Happy Valley (about 1 hour).
  • From the North or West:
Book with Kingfisher Barges from River Heads. Drive to Hervey Bay and then take the barge from River Heads. Drive across the island and then, preferably around the time of the low tide, drive up the beach to Happy Valley (approx 1.5 hours). DO NOT trust Google maps – it doesn’t recognise the eastern beach as a road and so will take you via the inland roads – much longer and slower and difficult!

You will see Fraser Island Retreat ahead of you as you drive into Happy Valley.

Remember that you MUST have a 4WD vehicle to access K’gari (Fraser Island).

Drive on the beach around the low tide – check the tides and download tide tables here.

You must also have a valid Vehicle Permit (number plate recognition is now operating) – book that online here.

Car parking is available opposite the shop. If you are staying with us then it’s just a short walk via some steps to your room.

You can also get here by air – contact Air Fraser and ask about their fly/drive/stay packages.
